Pirates place rookie OF Esmerlyn Valdez on IL after 4-3 loss at Wrigley
Valdez went on the 10-day IL Saturday with a left hamstring strain suffered running out a grounder Friday. Ronny Simon was recalled from Indianapolis. Saturday, Ryan O’Hearn homered in his return and Paul Skenes threw seven innings, but Chicago rallied for a 4-3 win.

Eagles place rookie TE Eli Stowers on IR; Covey elevated for Week 1
Philadelphia placed second-round tight end Eli Stowers on injured reserve Saturday with quadriceps and hamstring injuries, so he will miss at least the first four games. Stowers had been listed as questionable and told reporters he expected to play; later imaging showed a longer rehab. Britain Covey was elevated from the practice squad. Available TEs for the Commanders opener: Dallas Goedert, Johnny Mundt, E.J. Jenkins.

Pitt defense holds UCF to 206 yards in rain-delayed 12-7 win
Damon Ferguson Jr. scored and Pittsburgh’s defense limited UCF to 206 total yards and 20 rushing in a weather-delayed Saturday win at Acrisure Stadium. Mason Heintschel passed for 212 yards. Pitt held a key running back out with an undisclosed injury.

Watt’s first career pick-6 lifts Steelers past Falcons 20-13 in McCarthy debut
Pittsburgh opened the Mike McCarthy era 1-0 at Acrisure Stadium. T.J. Watt jumped a Cooper Rush screen early in the fourth and returned it 35 yards for his first career pick-six, turning a 13-10 game into 20-10. Aaron Rodgers went 24-of-40 for 221 yards and a 6-yard TD to Pat Freiermuth after Jaquan Brisker’s interception. The run game managed 58 yards; the Steelers were 3-of-13 on third down. Atlanta started Rush with Tua Tagovailoa and Michael Penix Jr. out. Bijan Robinson had 173 scrimmage yards (21-83 rushing, 8-90 receiving, 23-yard TD). Nick Folk added 51- and 43-yard field goals. Cam Heyward batted multiple passes; the Steelers sacked Rush four times. Joey Porter Jr. was inactive.

Braves rout Phillies 12-2, stretch NL East lead to six
Atlanta exploded for eight runs in the fourth and beat Philadelphia 12-2 on Saturday night, taking the series. Ronald Acuña Jr. and Michael Harris II homered; Tyler Mahle went seven strong. Bryce Harper’s first-inning solo shot was the Phillies’ main highlight. Philadelphia sits 82-67, six back, with the Braves’ division magic number at seven.
